Through Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL), knowledge and skills gained through formal education, professional training, work, self-learning, and life experiences can be identified, documented, and assessed through a structured process.
What Is APEL?
APEL recognises that meaningful learning takes place not only in classrooms, but also through work, training, professional practice, and everyday life. It provides a systematic approach to assess an individual’s existing knowledge, skills, and competencies against the requirements of a particular level or programme of study. In simple terms, APEL gives value to what you have already learned and experienced.
What Is APEL.A?
APEL.A stands for Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning for Access. The “A” means “Access” — access to higher education through an alternative admission pathway. APEL.A is designed for individuals who may not possess the conventional academic qualifications required for entry into selected higher education programmes, but who have gained valuable knowledge, skills, and experience through work, training, professional practice, self-learning, or life experiences.

1. Pre-Application Process
Self-Assessment
This is the initial stage where prospective applicants explore the APEL.A pathway and determine whether their prior learning, work experience, knowledge, and skills may be suitable for admission through APEL.A.
Applicants are encouraged to understand the relevant entry requirements, identify their intended programme of study, and conduct a self-assessment of their readiness before proceeding with the formal application.
2. Application Phase
Registration through the APEL.A MQA Portal
Applicants who wish to proceed must register through the official Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) APEL.A portal.
During this stage, applicants submit the required information, select the relevant APEL.A assessment centre or institution, and complete the applicable registration and payment requirements through the official portal.

3. Assessment
Aptitude Test
The Aptitude Test is conducted to evaluate the applicant’s general academic readiness and ability to undertake studies at the intended qualification level.
The assessment may measure areas such as logical reasoning, numerical ability, language proficiency, problem-solving, and general knowledge, depending on the requirements applicable to the relevant APEL.A level.
Applicants must achieve the required outcome before progressing to the next stage of assessment.
Portfolio
Applicants who passed the Aptitude Test may proceed to the Portfolio Assessment stage.
The portfolio allows applicants to present evidence of knowledge, competencies, skills, and learning acquired through formal, non-formal, and informal learning, as well as relevant work and life experiences.
The portfolio should demonstrate how the applicant’s prior learning relates to the learning outcomes and requirements of the intended qualification.
4. Post-Assessment
Result
Upon completion of the required assessment components, the applicant will receive the APEL.A assessment result through the applicable notification channel.
The result will indicate whether the applicant has successfully fulfilled the assessment requirements and may proceed according to the applicable APEL.A procedures.
APEL Certification
Applicants who successfully complete the APEL.A assessment process will be eligible to obtain the relevant APEL.A certificate issued through the recognised MQA process.
The certificate serves as formal recognition that the applicant has successfully demonstrated the required prior learning and competencies for the relevant APEL.A admission pathway.
Appeal
Applicants who fail an assessment must submit an appeal in accordance with the applicable procedures before they may proceed with a subsequent Aptitude Test resit or Portfolio resubmission, subject to the relevant eligibility requirements and waiting periods.
